Tandem

  • This station on the passion path in Vienna was both a job-related and personal experiment. It brought together the industrial designer, Steffen Kehrle and the renowned musical instruments craftsmen, Nupi Jenner & Simone Zopf with their totally different ways of approaching work and their totally different manner of working. The instrument makers are craft orientated with an additional historical focus; the designer’s focus is industry and his form language is more rigorously rational. The result of this collaboration was a highly sensuous product. The tandem-guitar is what happened when the blinkers were thrown off and is an example of what can come into existence when the boundaries of one’s own field of thought are overcome. Steffen Kehrle regards himself as unmusical but has conceived this instrument nonetheless, an instrument which not only can produce music but is also in itself communicative. The tandem guitar takes “playing music together” literally and is an absurdly attractive artefact, which one constantly wants to look at and grab hold of.
  • Diese Passionswege-Station in Wien war ein berufliches und privates Experiment: die Zusammenarbeit von Industrie-Designer Steffen Kehrle mit den renommierten Instrumentenbauermeistern Nupi Jenner & Simone Zopf. Zwei völlig unterschiedliche Herangehensweisen, zwei völlig unterschiedliche Arbeitspraktiken. Die handwerklich orientierten Instrumentenbauer – noch dazu mit historischer Ausrichtung – und ein Designer mit industriellem Fokus, dessen Formensprache eher streng rational zu beschreiben wäre. Das Ergebnis der Kooperation war ein höchst sinnliches Produkt. Die Tandem-Gitarre ist das Ergebnis des Scheuklappen-Öffnens, ein Beispiel dafür, was entstehen kann, wenn über die eigene Disziplin hinaus gedacht wird. Steffen Kehrle empfindet sich selbst als unmusikalisch und hat dennoch ein Instrument erdacht, und zwar eines, das nicht nur musikalisch sondern auch kommunikativ ist. Die Tandem-Gitarre nimmt „miteinander musizieren“ wörtlich – und sie ist ein absurd-anziehendes Objekt, das man immer wieder ansehen und anfassen will.
